Amendment strengthens density notification to women and is modeled after laws in New York and California

Virginia has amended its breast density inform law to include language in information given to patients explaining the risk of dense breast tissue.

Originally signed into law by Gov. Bob McDonnell in 2012, the amendment strengthens the density notification to women and is modeled after laws in New York and California. The amendment to the law becomes effective July 1, 2013.

"I felt density notification, which did not include mention of density as a risk factor, was insufficient. This amendment now gives Virginia women a more complete understanding of their density and its inherent risks, and it lets them know that they can discuss further screening with their physicians. I am grateful to Del. Orrock for his work on the bill last session and to Del. Filler-Corn for her efforts on the amendment this session," said advocate Cathy Tatusko. "The amendment ensures that many more Virginia women will be spared my fate, and it makes Virginia another leading state with respect to this life-saving legislation that is now sweeping the country."
