October 28, 2013 — The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) Foundation is announced the Echo AUC, a new mobile application that is designed to guide physicians in appropriate procedures in cardiovascular care and echocardiography, is available for download in both the Apple and Droid application stores. ASE staff will demonstrate the app on iPads at the ASE booth (no. 755) at the CHEST 2013 meeting, being held through Oct. 31 in Chicago.
Echo features non-invasive, radiation-free and cost-effective way to diagnose cardiovascular disease. With its safety and ease of use, it is employed to diagnose patients of all ages.
The miniaturization of the ultrasound device has accelerated its use in a growing variety of settings and in the hands of a growing number of specialists, from the emergency room to the mobile medical lab.
This app is intended to appeal to a broad medical audience to enhance the conversations between physicians and patients about avoiding unnecessary care or overused medical tests and procedures in cardiovascular care, specifically echocardiography. Each echo scenario on the app provides a decision-tree and possible patient talking points. With this smartphone assistance, physicians are empowered to counter inappropriate echo ordering and can effectively counsel and reassure their patients with easily understood language about the reasons an echo may not be scientifically necessary.
The Echo AUC app also includes quick access to the "Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question" lists developed by ASE and over 25 participating specialty societies as part of the “Choosing Wisely” campaign. These lists are evidence-based recommendations that can be utilized to help make wise decisions about the most appropriate care based on a patient's individual situation.
