January 26, 2015 — Soundwaves LLC announced its expansion into musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound in-office services so that Florida patients and their doctors may begin to benefit from the MSK ultrasound experience.

MSK ultrasound allows physicians to visualize muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and joints in an office setting for diagnostic purposes as well as precisely guided injection procedures.

According to a report in a Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (SDMS) newsletter in January 2012, as the United States tries to balance reduced healthcare costs with high quality care, and radiation safety concerns mount, more American physicians are expected to use MSK sonography – “not only to diagnose but also to treat musculoskeletal injuries.”

In fact, the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) recently began offering an MSK sonography credential, the Registered in Musculoskeletal (RMSK) sonography credential – a strong signal that MSK ultrasound is on the rise.

James Voglino, M.D., a Miami orthopedic surgeon who already uses the service, says, “As a busy physician, Soundwaves’ full service component is what I find attractive. It has allowed me to add diagnostic and therapeutic technology to my practice, which has optimized the care of my patients.

Procedures that we were not able to do in office, such as hip intra-articular injections and shoulder bicipital groove injections, we can now do with confidence," added Voglino.

The HIPAA-compliant web-based service allows medical providers to access every ultrasound image report whenever and wherever they need it.

MSK ultrasound offers the capability to help diagnose and/or evaluate a range of musculoskeletal disorders, including:

  • Rotator cuff tears; abnormalities of the biceps tendon
  • Tendon abnormalities and injuries
  • Partial thickness tears and calcific tendonitis
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Ganglion and Baker cysts
  • Bleeding or other fluid collections in muscles and joints
  • Biceps brachii longhead tendon subluxation
  • Intrasubstance alterations and partial thickness tears of the ankle
  • Soft tissue infectious process adjacent to an orthopedic device
  • Hip dysplasia

The technology can also help differentiate cellulitis, septic effusion and soft tissue abscess; can determine whether a mass is cystic or solid; and can detect foreign bodies, such as wood.
