Orfit Industries America's Efficast thermoplastic mask, part of the Raycast High-precision Patient Immobilization/Positioning System, which applies a new technology for head, neck and shoulder immobilization systems used in radiation therapy, is on display at ASTRO 2008.
The system is said to allow for less than 2 mm of movement by the patient. Orfit is also offering a hands-on demonstration of the system for the duration of the show at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Efficast masks have been engineered to provide sub-2 mm precision and reproducibility of the immobilization, while being thinner than other masks routinely used in radiation oncology departments. Thinner Efficast masks enable close contouring to the patients’ anatomy and an excellent skin sparing effect.
During molding, the material contracts uniformly to avoid pressure points. A special coating prevents the mask from adhering to the skin or hair.
The pre-cut Efficast masks can be softened in warm water, avoiding discomfort to the therapist and the patient during the molding and setting process. On average Orfit masks can be molded in water 10 to 15 F cooler than other materials. If needed, the entire mask or a portion can be reformed by warming to save the cost of a new mask.
