April 7, 2011 – Saint Barnabas Health Care System (SBHCS), New Jersey’s largest healthcare delivery system, has selected McKesson to replace its multiple legacy medical imaging solutions. SBHCS plans to implement the Horizon Medical Imaging picture archiving communications system (PACS) to integrate patient data and images from multiple modalities across its multi-facility health system.

That integration is expected to help streamline clinical workflow, increase collaboration and enhance productivity for providers, who treat more than two million patients annually.

“The Saint Barnabas Health Care System and our physicians are impressed with McKesson’s ability to meet subspecialty demands with clinical workflow applications that promote efficiencies and support care in areas such as women’s health, nuclear medicine and orthopedics,” said James Wortman, corporate director of enterprise imaging and cardiovascular information technology and services, Saint Barnabas Health Care System. “In addition, we expect that McKesson’s deep solution set, broad integration capabilities and well-established reputation for customer support and professional services will serve us well.”

Using the system’s open, standards-based solution, SBHCS plans to take an enterprise-wide approach to the acquisition, distribution and archiving of medical images and diagnostic reports. The PACS creates an integrated environment designed to streamline workflow between departments, help improve clinical decision making and enhance efficiencies for the radiologist. Physicians can access tools and information using a single platform for accelerated clinical diagnoses in caring for their patients.

“SBHCS shares the challenges of other leading regional health systems – how to modernize healthcare IT and care delivery in today’s economic environment,” said Joe Biegel, VP of product management product marketing, medical imaging/enterprise imaging solutions, McKesson provider technologies. “We are pleased to provide a full range of solutions and support services that can help SBHCS continue to deliver high-quality patient care.”

The Saint Barnabas Health Care System is the largest not-for-profit integrated health care delivery system in New Jersey and one of the largest in the nation. SBHCS includes six acute care hospitals, a behavioral health center, outpatient centers, ambulatory surgery centers, two children’s hospitals, geriatric centers, the state’s largest behavioral health network and comprehensive home care and hospice programs. It provides treatment and services for more than two million patients each year, including 198,000 inpatients and same-day surgery patients; 452,000 emergency patients; 200,000 pediatric patients; and 1.5 million outpatients, and delivers more than 18,000 babies each year.
