CIVCO Focuses on Robotic Innovation and Motion Management at ASTRO 2011

September 28, 2011 – At ASTRO, Civco Medical Solutions will highlight the Protura Robotic Patient Positioning System and multiple motion management solutions, including the RFSuite RFID Tracking & Verification System.

Protura Robotic Patient Positioning System

Civco's Protura Robotic Patient Positioning System positions patients in 6 degrees of freedom with sub-millimeter accuracy. Knowing the demands of the clinic and the importance of patient safety, precision and accuracy were fundamental to the design of Protura. Civco's robotic system integrates with existing image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) solutions and linear accelerators. There are currently 14 Proturas installed in four countries, with several more pending installations.

"As cancer centers continue to adopt more advanced imaging modalities, they gain the ability to visualize anatomy more precisely," said Eric Knipfer, Civco's director of business development for Protura. "By adding Protura, clinicians are able to take full advantage of the robotics platform by treating at sub-millimeter accuracy. We have seen the clinical advantages not just in [stereotactic body radiotherapy] SBRT cases but also in standard IMRT. I am excited to see the increases in accuracy and efficiency along with the improved clinical workflow robotics adds to these programs."

Protura may assist with decreasing patient treatment times by allowing the therapist to reposition the patient without re-entering the treatment room. Protura is the ideal solution for streamlining throughput and enabling more accurate treatments.

RFSuite RFID Tracking & Verification System

The RFSuite system uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to track patients, staff and equipment and to provide accessory and patient identity verification for treatment. The RFSuite software, RFTrak, provides a snapshot of where people and items are located in a facility in real time, improving workflow by eliminating time wasted looking for misplaced treatment accessories and reducing patient wait time. Civco's RFSeries line provides a broad array of RFID-enabled positioning products.

"RFSuite and other innovative Civco solutions are providing the clinical community with today's tools needed to enhance safety and ensure the effective delivery of radiation therapy," said Geoffrey Dalbow, chief technology officer for Civco.  "We are collecting compelling clinical data on the use of RFID technologies to reduce errors and improve radiation oncology workflow at both Moores Cancer Center in San Diego, Calif., and Hospital San Raffaele in Milan, Italy." RFSuite represents the macro component of Civco's motion management symposium.

New Horizon Prone Breastboard

Civco's New Horizon Prone Breastboard assists in providing comfortable, reproducible patient positioning for prone breast treatments. The modular design and a variety of accessories allow clinicians to customize patient setups, including overall height adjustments. The indexable New Horizon features a height adjustable, indexable prone face cushion as well as indexable hand placement, including asymmetrical options for patient comfort.  The treatment opening is past midline for medial field edge visualization, and a variety of wedges are available for the contralateral breast to assist in proper patient positioning. The bridge attachment option offers the use of a Clam-Lok Cushion and Laser-Lok.
