July 22, 2010 – D3 Radiation Services recently announced that the American Board of Radiology (ABR) has qualified eDataAudit—a new service designed to reduce errors in the delivery of radiation therapy—as a Practice Quality Improvement (PQI) for the purpose of Maintenance of Certification (MOC).

With eDataAudit, participating clinics and radiation oncology physicists can order a comprehensive audit of their beam data through the use of a web portal.

“This is a unique service that addresses a major recommendation of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) TG-106 report requiring beam data to be audited prior to going clinical,” said Nabil Adnani, Ph.D., DABR, chief products development officer at D3 Radiation Services.

According to reports by international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Authority and the World Health Organization, the majority of reported adverse events in radiation oncology can be traced back to errors committed during linear accelerator commissioning. More recently, the Radiological Physics Center (RPC) at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center published a report about the problems of credentialing radiation oncology clinics to participate in National Cancer Institute sponsored clinical trials. According to the center, approximately three out of 10 participating clinics failed their credentialing efforts, with the majority of the failures traceable to commissioning errors.

“With ABR’s approval, eDataAudit will not only help minimize these errors but also provide reports that participating physicists can use to fulfill the fourth component of the ABR’s Maintenance of Certification requirements,” Adnani said.
