March 17, 2009 - The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) said that Calypso Medical, Standard Imaging and Varian Medical Systems have been elected to serve three-year terms on ASTRO's Corporate Advisory Council.

PTW New York was also elected to serve the balance of a term vacated by Carestream Health. These companies were elected by ASTRO's corporate membership and were approved by the ASTRO Board of Directors.

"It is very important for ASTRO to maintain a good working relationship with our industry partners as these companies continue to innovate tools that help our physician members use radiation therapy to treat and cure people living with a diagnosis of cancer," said Hak Choy, M.D., chair of ASTRO's corporate relations committee and a radiation oncologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. "We believe that fostering this forum helps our society successfully connect the patient, doctor and industry in targeting cancer care."

The Corporate Advisory Council is a representative body of ASTRO's corporate membership, consisting of nearly 100 equipment, device and pharmaceutical companies who are involved in radiation therapy. Council seats are balanced between small-, medium- and large-sized corporations, represent a cross section of the radiation oncology industry and are elected positions. The goal of the council is to focus on issues of mutual concern to all corporate members and to increase awareness of radiation therapy and advance the science and practice of radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer.
